Lactalis strengthens Portuguese presence with Queijos Tavares acquisition
In 2025, Lactalis acquired Queijos Tavares, a prominent Portuguese cheese manufacturer, to bolster its operations in Portugal.
The deal, announced on May 1, 2025, integrates Queijos Tavares’ two production facilities in Seia and Fundão, increasing Lactalis’ manufacturing sites in the country to four.
This move follows the company’s earlier acquisition of Sequeira & Sequeira in March 2024, reflecting a strategic push to deepen its footprint in the Portuguese dairy market.
Founded in 1996, Queijos Tavares is known for producing high-quality cheeses under brands such as Seia do Tavares, Serras de Penela, Damar, and Monte da Soalheira.
The company supplies products to food distributors and the hospitality sector, earning a strong reputation in central Portugal.
The acquisition brings approximately 120 employees into Lactalis’ operations, raising its total workforce in Portugal to around 820.
This expansion enhances Lactalis’ capacity to meet growing consumer demand for premium cheese products in the region.
“We are excited to welcome Queijos Tavares into the Lactalis family,” said a Lactalis spokesperson.
“This acquisition aligns with our commitment to delivering authentic, high-quality dairy products while strengthening our presence in Portugal’s vibrant market.”
The deal comes amid Lactalis’ broader global expansion efforts. In 2024, the company acquired the Yoplait yogurt business in the United States from General Mills and Nestlé’s Cremora creamers business in South Africa.
Additionally, Lactalis has invested significantly in other markets, including a US$55.3 million expansion of its dairy facilities in Brazil’s Paraná state to boost production of yogurts, fermented milk, and dairy beverages.
