European dairy sector reinforces commitment to sustainability, EDA Sustainability Paper highlights

EUROPE – The European dairy sector remains steadfast in its commitment to achieving a net climate-neutral EU by 2050 while ensuring food and nutritional security amid geopolitical uncertainties and sustainability challenges.

The European Dairy Association (EDA) has reafffirmed the industry’s focus on environmental, social, and economic sustainability, emphasizing that a diet must align with individuals’ nutritional needs to be truly sustainable.

A report by the EDA highlights ongoing initiatives by dairy companies and associations across Europe, showcasing the industry’s role in advancing climate goals.

“The dairy sector is not only reducing its carbon footprint but also actively contributing to the green transition through carbon farming and circular resource use,” stated the EDA.

The sector remains one of the most efficient globally in terms of carbon intensity and aims to further mitigate on-farm greenhouse gas emissions through sustainable pasturelands, which serve as vital carbon sinks.

EDA advocates for policy frameworks that recognize these contributions and incentivize sustainability efforts within the agri-food sector.

According to the report, circularity remains a key aspect of dairy production, with cows playing a crucial role in utilizing land unsuitable for other crops while converting inedible food stock into high-value protein for human consumption.

Additionally, dairy farms are contributing to renewable energy production through anaerobic digestion of manure, generating biogas for power and heat.

This integration of energy production within the dairy supply chain not only reduces emissions but also supports the transition towards a bioeconomy.

Water conservation and responsible resource management also feature prominently in the sector’s sustainability strategies.

Dairy processors are enhancing efficiency in water use through improved cleaning systems and innovative treatment technologies.

The sector is also working towards minimizing food waste by ensuring every component of milk is fully utilized while extending product shelf life to reduce wastage at the consumer level.

Ensuring animal welfare remains a top priority, with EDA advocating for practical legislation that upholds high standards throughout the production cycle.

Farmers’ efforts to enhance sustainability should be supported through financial frameworks such as the Common Agricultural Policy and carbon farming initiatives.

In addition, dairy processors are investing in renewable energy solutions, including solar and wind power, to reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

However, the industry stresses the need for financial support to meet the significant investment demands of transitioning to low-carbon operations.

Consumer education is also a crucial component of the industry’s sustainability efforts.

“Providing accurate and science-based information to consumers is essential for advancing sustainable food systems,” the EDA stated.

The organization supports harmonized voluntary origin labeling for dairy products while cautioning against the potential economic and environmental consequences of mandatory labeling regulations.

Furthermore, the EU School Food Scheme is recognized as a vital initiative in promoting dairy consumption among children, reinforcing the role of milk and dairy in balanced diets.

The sector continues to refine its environmental footprint assessment through the Dairy Product Environmental Footprint methodology, which evaluates sustainability across multiple indicators.
