GLP-1 medications shift consumer focus to protein quality, boosting dairy demand

GLP-1 drugs are reshaping consumer priorities, with appetite suppression driving demand for high-quality protein.

FINLAND – The growing use of GLP-1 drugs is influencing consumer food choices, with a noticeable shift toward high-quality protein, according to Dr. Kevin Deegan, Vice President for Innovation at Finland-based dairy company Valio.

Speaking at the Arena Dairy Innovation Strategies conference in Amsterdam on March 25, Dr. Deegan explained that the appetite-suppressing effects of these medications encourage users to prioritize protein quality over quantity.

“Dairy proteins are perceived as natural, high-quality, and nutritionally complete, making them a preferred option for consumers who are more selective due to appetite suppression,” Dr. Deegan noted.

This trend is benefiting dairy producers, as products such as milk, cheese, and yogurt offer accessible sources of premium protein.

However, reduced appetite makes taste a critical factor. Mike Bagshaw from International Taste Solutions highlighted that flavour innovation is essential to ensure nutrient-dense products remain appealing to GLP-1 users.

Flavour suppliers are increasingly tasked with masking off-notes in high-protein formulations and enhancing sensory satisfaction, which is crucial for repeat consumption.

Research from Cornell University cautions that the impact of GLP-1 drugs on dietary behavior may be temporary.

Once the medication is discontinued, some consumers may revert to prior dietary patterns, increasing consumption of less healthy foods.

This suggests that while the trend benefits dairy in the short term, long-term market strategies will require ongoing innovation in both product quality and taste.

GLP-1 drugs, initially administered via injection for diabetes and obesity, may soon be available in pill form, potentially expanding the consumer base.

Dr. Deegan emphasized that the food industry is responding to these behavioral shifts rather than driving them, highlighting the need for agile product development strategies that align with evolving health trends.

Similar developments are being observed in other protein-rich sectors, including plant-based alternatives, where companies are focusing on high-quality protein sources paired with enhanced flavour profiles to attract health-conscious consumers.

For the dairy industry, this trend reinforces the value of positioning products as both nutritionally superior and palatably enjoyable.
