Cam Dairies Nigeria shuts down amid industry challenges

The shutdown reflects broader challenges facing Nigerian dairy producer.

NIGERIA – Cam Dairy Foods Limited, a dairy manufacturer, has officially ceased operations, marking a sobering moment for the country’s struggling indigenous dairy industry.

Founded in 2018 and headquartered in Abuja, Cam Dairies aimed to revolutionize market access for pastoralist communities, especially women and youth, by building infrastructure and systems to support local milk production.

Cam Dairies had positioned itself as a blueprint for smallholder-driven agriculture, with ambitions to scale across Nigeria and the Sahel.

However, the harsh business environment—characterized by unreliable electricity, poor cold-chain logistics, and lack of supportive trade policies—proved too difficult to overcome. The company’s closure joins a growing list of Nigerian firms that have folded in recent years due to economic pressures.

The shutdown reflects broader challenges facing Nigerian dairy producers, including intense competition from subsidized imports, inadequate infrastructure, and limited access to financing.

Despite Nigeria having over 20 million cattle, the country still imports over US$1.5 billion worth of dairy annually, much of it in the form of fat-filled milk powder—a cheaper substitute that undercuts local producers.

“After years of nourishing Nigerian households with real, fresh milk, we have made the incredibly hard decision to close our doors and cease operations at Câm. Despite our progress, we faced major challenges in 2024. After exploring every option, we could not secure the funding needed to keep growing and serving you. Thank you to everyone who supported Câm,”Aisha, Founder & CEO at Cam Dairies stated.

Industry experts warn that without urgent reforms, more indigenous dairy companies may follow suit. Calls are growing for the Nigerian government to implement protective tariffs, invest in infrastructure, and create dairy-specific financing models to support local producers.

Cam Dairy’s CEO leads dairy revolution in Nigeria

In 2024, Ms. Aisha Bashir, founder and CEO of Cam Dairy Foods Limited championed a revolution in Nigeria’s dairy sector as she shared her inspiring story of catalyzing the sector’s success.

Collaborating with over 400 pastoralists, Bashir aimed to reach 600,000 by 2030, addressing the staggering statistic that 80% of milk consumed in Nigeria is imported.

She highlighted her relentless efforts to transform the dairy industry, emphasizing the company’s ambitions to quest the deficit in the Nigerian dairy sector.

Cam Dairy Foods Limited, a pastoralist-driven dairy social enterprise, partnered with local communities to ensure a consistent supply of dairy-based nutrition across Nigeria.

From milking to packaging, Bashir overseed the entire process, empowering women and enhancing the skills of dairy farmers to boost their income and improve cattle health.
