Dr. Shaffer will officially take on the role on July 16, 2025, succeeding Dr. David Nation.

AUSTRALIA – Dairy Australia, the national body for the Australian dairy sector, has appointed Dr. Matthew Shaffer as its new Chief Executive Officer, who will assume the role on 16 July 2025.
He succeeds the current Managing Director, Dr. David Nation, who will step down after seven years of service.
In a statement, the Board cited Dr. Shaffer’s strong commercial experience in agriculture, passion for the dairy sector, and strategic vision as key factors in his selection.
Dairy Australia Chair Paul Roderick expressed confidence in Matt Shaffer’s capabilities, emphasising his extensive experience and proven track record in driving significant change.
He highlighted Shaffer’s leadership at DataGene and his deep involvement with global networks, government, and the dairy industry, stating that these qualities make him well-suited to lead Dairy Australia into its next phase.
Dr. Shaffer currently serves as CEO of DataGene, an industry-owned organisation dedicated to driving genetic improvement in Australia’s dairy herds.
His previous roles include CEO of Holstein Australia and a finance career with the Hancock Agricultural Investment Group, where he played an international operations role.
“I am honoured to join Dairy Australia at such a pivotal time. I look forward to working with farmers, stakeholders, and the broader agricultural community to support a strong and sustainable future for the industry,” he said.
His appointment coincides with the development of Dairy Australia’s new five-year strategy, which the organisation states will focus on helping farmers unlock the potential of their businesses, adapt to future challenges, and support industry sustainability.
“As we finalise our new strategic direction following consultation with farmers, Matt’s leadership will be critical in ensuring we continue to deliver value to the dairy community,” Roderick added. “He brings a clear focus on innovation, resilience, and sustainability—areas that are central to our future.”
Dr. David Nation’s departure
Dr. David Nation announced in late 2024 his intention to step down by mid-2025. His tenure is credited with advancing research, innovation, and sustainability within the sector.
Roderick said, “David has challenged the status quo and championed initiatives that have had a lasting impact on the dairy industry. His leadership in key programs such as DairyBio and DairyFeedbase has been instrumental, as has his work in enhancing sustainability efforts and community engagement.”
