Arla Foods initiates US$210M mozzarella plant construction in UK

The new plant will create over 100 jobs

UK – Arla Foods, a leading dairy cooperative, has commenced construction on a US$210 million mozzarella production facility at its Taw Valley Creamery in Devon, United Kingdom.

The project, one of the largest investments by the farmer-owned company in the UK, aims to bolster the nation’s dairy industry and enhance Arla’s global mozzarella market presence.

The plant is expected to begin operations as early as 2027, creating significant economic and employment opportunities in the region.

The state-of-the-art facility will incorporate advanced technology to produce high-quality mozzarella, catering to both domestic and international markets.

Arla Foods, already a key player in the global cheese sector, intends to leverage this investment to strengthen its supply chain and ensure competitive pricing for its farmer owners.

Bas Padberg, managing director of Arla Foods UK, emphasized the project’s significance, stating, “This investment into our Taw Valley site showcases our commitment to driving change in the UK and supporting the future of British dairy.”

According to the company, the new plant will create over 100 jobs, boosting the local economy in Devon.

To support long-term employment, Arla plans to launch an apprenticeship program, training individuals over the next two years with the prospect of full-time positions once production begins.

Fran Ball, vice president of production at Arla Foods UK, said, “We’re incredibly proud to see work begin on this cutting-edge mozzarella plant, which will not only advance our production capabilities but also foster opportunities for local talent.”

The project follows Arla’s record-breaking global investments of over US$1.17 billion in 2024, as noted in its annual results.

Additionally, the cooperative has proposed a US$105 million investment in its Lockerbie site in Scotland, further demonstrating its commitment to UK dairy manufacturing.

Despite recent controversies, including backlash over a methane-reducing feed additive trial, Arla remains focused on sustainability and innovation,

The Taw Valley Creamery’s expansion is poised to enhance Arla’s ability to meet growing demand for mozzarella, a staple in global cuisines.

With headquarters in Leeds and a network of over 7,600 farmers across Europe, Arla Foods continues to prioritize quality and efficiency.
