GEA introduces digital herd management with CowScout Cloud in Australia

It combines 24/7 rumination and heat tracking with cloud analytics to optimize herd health and labor efficiency.

AUSTRALIA – GEA Farm Technologies has launched CowScout Cloud across Australia, introducing the next generation of its digital herd monitoring platform designed to enhance reproductive performance, animal health, and operational efficiency.

Built upon the established CowScout monitoring system, the cloud-based upgrade pairs continuous individual cow behavioural tracking with centralised data management, providing dairy producers and their veterinary advisors with instant, secure access to herd analytics via web and mobile interfaces.

The platform monitors critical individual cow parameters around the clock, including rumination patterns, eating time, physical activity levels, and health indicators.

By analyzing real-time deviations in baseline behavior, the system calculates dedicated health scores and in-heat scores, enabling producers to pinpoint cows entering estrus or exhibiting early metabolic disorders before physical symptoms manifest in the milking parlor.

This automated detection significantly cuts manual drafting time, optimizes artificial insemination (AI) timing, and helps boost conception rates.

Designed to address persistent on-farm labor shortages and the increasing scale of Australian commercial dairies, CowScout Cloud introduces actionable daily worklists and advanced reporting tools.

The architecture allows producers to shift from reactive cow monitoring to proactive herd performance management, incorporating unlimited historical data storage for longitudinal genetic and physical analysis, alongside multi-farm dashboard management for corporate and multi-site operators.

The cloud-based framework delivers continuous automatic software updates and enhanced processing power without requiring complex on-farm server maintenance.

Rather than replacing existing dairy infrastructure, CowScout Cloud operates as a complementary digital layer that seamlessly integrates with GEA DairyNet, the operational herd and parlor management software, as well as third-party farm software and drafting gates to automate cow sorting during milking shifts.

Andrew Stansfield, Country Manager of GEA Farm Technologies Australia & New Zealand, emphasized that the platform provides scalable digital infrastructure to support sustainable herd expansion while protecting individual cow welfare.

Available for both new installations and existing CowScout collar or ear-sensor users through GEA’s national dealer network, the technology reflects the growing adoption of precision agriculture solutions across Australia’s pasture and hybrid dairy sectors.

The pricing model is modular and based on farm-specific requirements. It combines one-time investments in sensor technology, system technology and installation with ongoing subscriptions for cloud-based data analysis, software updates and platform functions.

The specific calculation depends on herd size, scope of functions and existing equipment and is provided by authorized GEA sales partners.
