KENYA – Alex Gathii Gitonga has been honoured with the Most Influential Dairy Person of the Year award at the Africa Dairy Industry Awards 2026, held on 17th April 2026 alongside the Africa Dairy Innovation Summit.
The recognition highlights his far-reaching impact in transforming dairy farming practices, capacity building, and value chain development across Africa.
A trained food scientist with a degree in Food Science and Technology from the University of Nairobi, Gitonga has built a distinguished career as a dairy value chain expert, consultant, and trainer.
Tanolope Consultancy Limited, which he founded, has grown into a leading advisory firm providing end-to-end solutions across the dairy ecosystem, including farm design, milk processing systems, equipment supply, and farmer training.
Over the years, Gitonga has played a pivotal role in advancing modern dairy farming techniques, particularly in productivity optimisation and cost efficiency.
Through his consultancy and training work, he has trained more than 200 farmers across multiple African countries, including Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, Nigeria, Senegal, and South Sudan, equipping them with practical skills to improve milk yields and farm profitability.
His influence extends beyond farm-level interventions into policy and institutional development. Gitonga has contributed to national-level frameworks, including participation in drafting livestock feed policies and veterinary legislation, reinforcing his role as a thought leader in shaping Kenya’s dairy sector.
In addition, he is a certified trainer with CowSignals Training Company, a globally recognised programme focused on cow health, behaviour, and farm management systems.
Through this platform, he promotes data-driven and welfare-focused dairy practices that enhance productivity while ensuring sustainability.
Gitonga’s work has earned international recognition, including acknowledgment by USAID’s Feed the Future programme as a “Champion of Change” for his contribution to agricultural transformation.
His approach emphasises shifting dairy farming from subsistence activity to a commercially viable enterprise, encouraging farmers to adopt structured feeding systems, silage production, and improved herd management practices.
Beyond consultancy, he has been instrumental in bridging gaps across the dairy value chain, connecting farmers to markets, improving access to modern equipment, and promoting quality and safety standards in milk production.
His long-term vision includes reaching thousands of farmers across Africa with practical, scalable solutions that enhance both productivity and livelihoods.
The Most Influential Dairy Person of the Year award recognises individuals whose work has significantly shaped the direction and growth of the dairy industry.
