ALGERIA – Baladna Algeria has signed second-phase agreements worth more than US$635 million as part of its US$3.5 billion integrated dairy project.
The agreements come alongside the launch of a large-scale airlift program to import dairy cattle from the United States, marking a significant step in the project’s execution and growth.
The airlift initiative will transport 30,000 Holstein Friesian dairy cows across 109 flights from 9 USA states. This effort supports the development of one of the world’s largest integrated dairy projects, designed to build a herd of approximately 270,000 cows.
Once fully operational, the project could meet up to 50% of Algeria’s powdered milk demand, significantly bolstering the nation’s food security.
The agreements were signed by Mr. Marek Warzywoda, Group CEO of Baladna, alongside representatives from participating companies.
Hunland and Scarff Bros will supply Holstein Friesian dairy cattle from the United States, as well as Valmont, a company specialising in irrigation systems.
The project is expected to generate more than 15,000 jobs in Algeria and around 1,200 jobs in the United States, reinforcing long-term industrial and agricultural partnerships between the two nations.
The initiative also highlights Algeria’s commitment to sustainable economic growth and modernized food production systems.
Baladna Algeria signed initial contracts valued at over USD 500 million with a group of Algerian and international suppliers and consultants to boost the Algerian dairy industry in 2025.
The initiative focuses on dairy cow farming and powdered milk production, aiming to supply 50% of Algeria’s national demand for powdered milk locally, thereby supporting the country’s goal of achieving self-sufficiency. It will also contribute to the supply of red meat and create more than 5,000 job opportunities for the local workforce.
Among the key international suppliers and consultants are GEA (Germany), a leader in dairy processing and automated milking systems; Valmont (USA), specialized in water-efficient irrigation systems; Urbacon UCC, a globally recognized contracting firm; and EHAF, a prominent engineering consultancy. Leading Algerian companies involved include Condor-Travocovia, RedMed Contracting, and EFORHYD, specialized in water well drilling.
The Baladna Algeria project is among the largest in the world and the first of its kind in Algeria. Spanning 117,000 hectares, the project is being developed through a strategic partnership between Baladna Q.P.S.C. and the Algerian government, represented by the National Investment Fund.
