KENYA – The Governor of Elgeyo Marakwet, Wisley Rotich, has recently hosted a delegation from the New Kenya Cooperative Creameries (New KCC), centered on forging a partnership that will see milk delivered under the school feeding program to Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) learners.
This collaboration is expected to have far-reaching benefits. By ensuring that learners receive milk regularly, the program aims to improve their nutrition and overall health, while also boosting school enrolment, attendance, and retention rates.
Access to nutritious milk will not only support the physical development of children but also enhance their ability to concentrate and perform academically.
Under the arrangement, New KCC will collect milk from the county’s coolers for processing, guaranteeing quality and safety before distribution.
Importantly, farmers will be paid promptly and consistently at a rate of US$0.39 (KES50) per litre, a move that secures their livelihoods and encourages sustainable dairy production.
Governor Rotich emphasized that the partnership reflects a shared commitment to both education and agriculture. By linking farmers directly to the school feeding program, the initiative strengthens the local economy while investing in the future of young learners.
Mr. Choge reaffirmed New KCC’s dedication to supporting community-based programs that align with national goals of food security and educational development.
New KCC, Uasin Gishu County introduce improved super napier for dairy farmers
In a move aimed at strengthening fodder production and increasing milk yields, the county government of Uasin Gishu partnered New Kenya Cooperative Creameries to launch the distribution of Pakchong Super Napier cuttings to dairy farmers.
The initiative marks a significant step toward strengthening the sustainability of milk supply at the farm level, ensuring farmers can maintain consistent yields throughout the season.
The initial distribution is targeted at dairy cooperative societies and individual farmers who supply milk to New KCC, positioning them to benefit directly from enhanced fodder quality and improved livestock nutrition.
The County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Agriculture, Agribusiness, Livestock Development and Fisheries, Dr. Sam Kotut, noted that, with proper agronomic practices, Pakchong Super Napier can yield between 180 and 200 tonnes per acre annually, significantly improving feed availability.
Managing Director of New KCC, Joseph Choge, described the initiative as a win-win partnership focused on sustainability and growth of the dairy sector by ensuring milk is produced throughout the year.
