Danone expands Alpro with Meal to Go plant-based meal-replacement drinks across Europe

Danone rolls out Alpro Meal to Go in key European markets, targeting the fast-growing on-the-go nutrition segment.

EUROPE – Danone has expanded its Alpro plant-based portfolio with the launch of meal-replacement drinks across Europe, as the French food group targets growth in the fast-rising on-the-go nutrition category.

The new products are being introduced under the Alpro Meal to Go brand in markets including Belgium and Germany, with further European roll-outs planned.

Guillaume Millet, vice-president of Danone’s plant-based business in Europe, said the range would be “soon available everywhere in Europe”, highlighting the company’s ambition to scale the new drinks rapidly.

“On-the-go meal replacement drinks is one of the most exciting and fastest-growing segments in Europe,” Millet said.

“But here’s a hard truth: too often, people don’t finish the bottle. [The drinks are] either too heavy, too sweet, or simply not truly ‘meal-worthy’, meaning they don’t get all the nutrients they are being promised and end up being hungry again soon after.”

Millet added that Danone had “rethought the whole experience” to ensure consumers enjoy the drinks and feel satisfied. “We created drinks with smooth, easy-to-drink textures that you want to finish,” he said.

The Alpro Meal to Go range is made with a blend of soy and oats and is being launched in four flavours. Each 500ml bottle contains 20 grams of protein derived from plant ingredients, according to Danone. In Germany, the drinks have a suggested retail price of €3.99 (US$4.72).

Christine Borghardt, category director for Danone’s plant-based products in the DACH markets, said the new line was designed to fit modern lifestyles.

“We know how busy life can be. With Alpro Meal To Go, we want to offer consumers a simple, delicious and balanced solution – without compromising on taste or quality,” Borghardt said.

The launch comes after Danone recently blocked the sale of certain infant formula products in Singapore at the request of the local regulator as a precautionary step.

A company spokesperson said Danone is working with the Singapore Food Agency and stressed that all products are “manufactured in line with strict food safety and quality standards and undergo rigorous testing before leaving our factories”.

The spokesperson added that “no irregularities or deviations in relation to Bacillus cereus and ‘Good Manufacturing Practices’ have been identified”, underscoring the company’s position on product safety.
