Amul to expand operations with new US$12M dairy plant in Assam

The new facility is expected to process one lakh liters of milk per day, benefiting around 20,000 dairy farmers in the region.

INDIA – Amul Dairy, a dairy operator under the Kaira District Co-operative Milk Producers’ Union Ltd, has announced plans to establish a new dairy processing plant in Assam.

The project, which involves an investment of Rs100 crore (US$12 million), aims to boost dairy production in the northeastern region and strengthen Amul’s market presence.

The new facility is expected to process one lakh litres of milk per day, benefiting approximately 20,000 dairy farmers in the state.

The initiative aligns with Amul’s broader expansion strategy, which includes new projects such as the Chittoor Dairy in Andhra Pradesh and an ice cream plant in Pune, both of which are already operational.

Amul Dairy Chairman Vipul Patel confirmed the development, stating that the Assam plant is part of the cooperative’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its footprint across India.

Managing Director Amit Vyas added that the facility is expected to become operational within the next one and a half years, playing a crucial role in supporting dairy farmers and improving milk production in the region.

The Assam government has allocated 20 bighas of land on lease to Amul at the Institute of Farm Management Campus in Rani, near Guwahati.

The state cabinet approved this decision as part of the Advantage Assam 2.0 programme, which seeks to enhance the dairy sector and create economic opportunities.

Additionally, the government has also introduced additional measures to support the dairy industry, including food subsidies and investment incentives. These efforts aim to create more job opportunities and improve the livelihoods of farmers and workers in the state.

Amul to set up curd plant in Kolkata

Recently, the company announced a major investment of Rs 600 crore to establish the world’s largest curd manufacturing plant in Kolkata.

The Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd (GCMMF), which owns the Amul brand, confirmed this development during the Bengal Global Business Summit (BGBS) 2025.

This integrated dairy plant is expected to boost Amul’s presence in West Bengal and strengthen India’s dairy sector.

Jayen Mehta, Managing Director of GCMMF, stated, “We will be setting up an integrated dairy plant in Kolkata, West Bengal.  The new facility will have the world’s largest curd manufacturing plant with a capacity of 10 lakh kg per day.”

The plant, which will be located at Sankrail Food Park in Howrah, will also have a milk processing capacity of 1.5 million litres per day.
