This deal is expected to accelerate the growth of the sheep dairy industry in New Zealand while providing Mengniu with premium milk resources.

CHINA/NEW ZEALAND – Mengniu, a leading dairy company in China, has partnered with Maui Milk, a manufacturer of sheep milk powder, to expand sheep milk exports and boost dairy production.
This partnership offers Maui access to a significant distribution network and strengthens Mengniu’s global strategy by accessing New Zealand’s premium sheep milk, a market increasing in popularity since Maui began exports to China in 2015.
Greg Hamill, CEO of Maui Milk, emphasised that this collaboration with Mengniu helps Maui quickly enter new markets, enhancing their sales channels and commercial scalability.
He added that the increasing demand for high-quality sheep milk in China aligns with the improving Chinese economy.
“Partnering with Mengniu helps Maui Milk quickly enter additional markets, expanding our sales channels and enabling commercial scalability,” he said.
For Maui Milk, the partnership boosts its recognition and credibility in global markets, especially in Asia, while supporting the rapid development of New Zealand’s sheep milk industry and enhancing export revenue.
Through this partnership, Mengniu, whose brand is owned by Inner Mongolia Mengniu Dairy Limited, aims to strengthen its international image and secure its supply chain.
By doing so, it ensures a response to the rising consumer preference for healthy, nutritious, and personalised dairy options, spotlighting sheep milk as a functional choice.
Mengniu eyes African market expansion
Recently, Mengniu announced that it is setting its sights on Africa as a key market for future growth. Wei Wei, Vice President of Mengniu Dairy, highlighted the continent’s potential during a factory tour in Beijing.
“We see Africa as a very important market right now,” Wei Wei said, emphasising the strategic role Africa could play in the company’s global ambitions.
While Mengniu has not outlined a timeline or specific investments, its expertise in high-end dairy products, such as Milk Deluxe and Just Yoghurt, positions it well to cater to Africa’s evolving tastes.
Analysts note that countries like Kenya and Rwanda, where local production struggles to meet demand, present significant opportunities.
Mengniu’s advanced manufacturing, showcased at its fully digitalised Ningxia factory, could give it an edge in these markets.
Mengniu’s potential entry could intensify competition, particularly in East Africa, where urbanisation and a growing middle class are driving demand for processed dairy.
“Africa’s market is ripe for investment due to its young population and increasing consumption,” said a Beijing-based industry analyst, who requested anonymity.
