Hilmar Cheese appoints new CEO as David Ahlem steps down

The announcement comes after a strategic search initiated by Hilmar’s board of directors two months ago

USA – Hilmar Cheese Company, a leading global producer of cheese and whey products, has announced the appointment of Jason Bates as its new chief executive officer, effective early 2025.

The transition follows the decision of current CEO David Ahlem to step down after nearly a decade in the role and 21 years with the company.

Ahlem, who has been pivotal in expanding Hilmar’s global reach, will move into an advisory role to ensure a smooth handover.

The announcement comes after a strategic search initiated by Hilmar’s board of directors two months ago, considering both internal and external candidates.

According to a report by Dairy Processing, Bates brings extensive experience in the dairy industry, having held senior leadership roles at major food processing firms.

His expertise in operational efficiency and market expansion aligns with Hilmar’s goals to strengthen its position in the competitive dairy sector.

“We are confident that Jason Bates will lead Hilmar into its next chapter of growth and innovation,” said Jim Ahlem, chairman of the board, in a statement.

Under David Ahlem’s leadership, Hilmar grew into a powerhouse, producing high-quality American cheese and whey ingredients sold worldwide.

A report by DairyNews.today highlighted Ahlem’s role in opening a new US$600 million production facility in Dodge City, Kansas, in 2025, which creates American-style cheese and innovative proteins.

This facility, noted for its sustainable design, supports Hilmar’s commitment to the U.S. Dairy Stewardship Commitment, aiming for a carbon-neutral dairy industry by 2050.

Reflecting on his tenure, Ahlem said, “I’m grateful for the incredible team and dairy farmers who made our growth possible.”

Bates is expected to build on this legacy, focusing on technological advancements like the HilmarConnect digital trading platform, which provides 24/7 global access to cheese pricing and availability.

The platform has enhanced Hilmar’s ability to meet customer demands efficiently. Bates will also navigate challenges such as fluctuating dairy prices and rising consumer interest in sustainable products.

Founded in 1984 by 12 dairy families in California, Hilmar has evolved from a local cooperative to a global brand, unifying its cheese and ingredients businesses under a single identity in 2023.

The company’s new logo and brand strategy emphasize its commitment to improving lives through dairy.

With Bates at the helm, Hilmar aims to continue delivering nutritional and economic value to its stakeholders while adapting to industry trends like functional nutrition and sustainability.
