Benni Foods expands in Uganda with new processing factory

,

UGANDA – Benni Foods, a leading Ugandan dairy producer, has officially launched its new dairy processing factory in Uganda, aiming to boost milk production and support local farmers.

The launch, officiated by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, marks a significant step toward enhancing milk production, supporting local farmers, and boosting Uganda’s dairy industry.

The factory aims to address the region’s excess milk production while creating employment opportunities.

Benni processes an extensive lineup of products, including Lactose Pharma Grade, Whey Protein Concentrate, Butter Oil, Anhydrous Milk Fat, Skimmed Milk Powder, and Whole Full Cream Milk Powder.

The company also specializes in infant nutrition, emphasizing high-quality products for early childhood development.

“At Benni Foods, we understand that the first few years of a child’s life are crucial for their growth. We are committed to providing parents with the best nutrition options for their babies,” the company says on its website.

The facility, situated in Kiruhura District, a thriving dairy region, is set to process a capacity of 1 million litres per day and provide more additional employment opportunities as operations expand beyond the initial test phase.

The launch comes at time when Uganda is aiming to increase yields from dairy cattle to 30 litres per day, from the current 6.2 litres and to have matching processing capacity.

According to data from Uganda’s Dairy Development Authority, farm gate prices in Western Uganda are among the lowest in the country for dairy, making the Kiruhura site especially attractive for export-oriented products.

The new factory is expected to benefit local farmers by increasing the demand for raw milk, providing them with a stable market.

“This facility will not only enhance production but also uplift the livelihoods of our farmers,” a Benni Foods executive stated during the launch event.

Between 2021/2022 and 2022/2023, the value of dairy exports from Uganda rose from  US$103.2m to  US$266.4m.

In addition, Benni Foods’ product range also includes specialized items like Sodium and Calcium Caseinates, Native Whey Protein, and Fat-Filled Milk Powder, catering to both local and international markets.
