Dairy-Free infant formula market grows as demand for plant-based nutrition rises

GLOBAL – The global dairy-free infant formula market is experiencing significant growth as more parents opt for plant-based alternatives due to concerns about lactose intolerance, milk allergies, and shifting dietary preferences.

A report by Exactitude Consultancy indicates that rising awareness of these issues, along with the growing adoption of vegan lifestyles, is driving demand for allergen-free infant formulas.

Parents are increasingly seeking dairy-free options made from soy, almond, rice, and other plant-based sources to ensure adequate infant nutrition while avoiding dairy-based ingredients.

According to the research, the dairy-free infant formula market is currently valued at approximately US$2.1 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach around US$4.5 billion by 2034, reflecting a CAGR of about 8.1% over the next decade.

Industry players are responding by developing innovative plant-based formulations fortified with essential nutrients such as DHA, ARA, and probiotics to closely mimic the nutritional profile of breast milk.

Sustainability concerns and ethical sourcing of ingredients are also playing a role in shaping product development, with manufacturers focusing on environmentally friendly solutions.

A report by DataM Intelligence highlights that lactose intolerance in infants remains a key driver of market expansion, as parents look for formulas that do not trigger digestive issues.

Additionally, the rising popularity of plant-based diets among adults is influencing infant nutrition choices, with many parents preferring dairy-free options that align with their lifestyles.

However, challenges such as higher costs compared to regular infant formulas and limited availability in certain regions could slow the market’s penetration, particularly in developing economies.

Several leading companies are actively investing in the sector, including Abbott Laboratories, Nestlé S.A., Reckitt Benckiser Group, Danone S.A., and Hain Celestial Group.

These firms are introducing alternatives beyond soy-based formulas, incorporating ingredients like pea, oat, and rice protein to cater to diverse consumer needs.

Parents are more conscious than ever about what they feed their babies, and plant-based formulas offer a safe and nutritious option for those avoiding dairy,” a nutrition specialist reported.

The market is also seeing expansion into emerging economies, where growing middle-class populations in regions such as Asia and Africa present untapped potential for dairy-free infant formula products.

Efforts to enhance regulatory approvals and ensure that plant-based formulas meet the nutritional standards of traditional dairy-based options are expected to shape the industry’s future.

“Ensuring that dairy-free formulas provide complete nutrition remains our top priority,” a spokesperson stated.

The broader lactose-free dairy market is also on the rise, with DataM Intelligence reporting that it reached US$11.9 billion in 2022 and is expected to grow to US$20.7 billion by 2030 at a CAGR of 7.2%.

As health awareness increases and more consumers seek digestive-friendly dairy alternatives, the demand for lactose-free milk, cheese, yogurt, and ice cream continues to expand.

Advances in enzyme technology and plant-based formulations are further diversifying product offerings, making lactose-free dairy an increasingly viable option for consumers worldwide.
