Cadbury Dairy Milk redesigns packaging to enhance its campaign

The campaign features 16 locally inspired scenarios, with each pack playfully dividing the chocolate slab according to the different roles people might take on in everyday situations.

SOUTH AFRICA – Cadbury Dairy Milk has introduced a range of limited-edition 80g and 150g slabs with redesigned packaging that reflects how each slab is made to be shared.

The company announced it is taking its long-standing association with generosity and giving it a distinctly South African expression, launching a new Made To Share campaign that turns the chocolate slab itself into a conversation starter.

Rather than simply promoting the act of sharing chocolate, the campaign recognises the often-unnoticed roles people play in making shared experiences happen.

The approach reflects a broader shift in FMCG marketing towards packaging that functions as more than a product wrapper, using the physical product to create recognition, participation and conversation at the point of purchase.

By putting these recognisable dynamics directly onto the product, Cadbury is using the packaging to encourage consumers to identify themselves — and others — in the moments represented.

From chocolate purchase to shared experience

For Cadbury, the campaign is rooted in the idea that generosity is not necessarily expressed through grand gestures.

“Within every shared moment, there’s often someone whose contribution makes all the difference, even if it sometimes doesn’t get the recognition it deserves,” says Simone Van Zyl, Chocolate Category marketing director for Mondelēz South Africa & Central East Africa.

She says the local execution was designed around authentic South African experiences and the humour associated with them.

The result is a campaign that links a familiar FMCG product with everyday social behaviour, while giving consumers a reason to interact with the packaging before the chocolate is even opened.

That has particular relevance in a competitive confectionery market, where brands are increasingly looking for ways to make products distinctive beyond flavour and price.

Bringing the campaign into retail

The limited-edition range is rolling out nationally across major retailers, bringing the campaign directly into the chocolate aisle.

The retail activation will be supported by mall experiences in Gauteng, Cape Town and Durban, extending the campaign beyond the pack and into physical consumer environments.

Cadbury is also introducing a digital ‘Slab Settler’ experience, designed to help consumers decide who gets the biggest piece of the chocolate — turning the perennial question of how to divide a shared treat into part of the campaign itself.

The combination of limited-edition packaging, physical activations and digital engagement reflects the increasingly integrated nature of FMCG campaigns, where the product, retail environment and digital experience are designed to reinforce one another.

For Cadbury Dairy Milk, however, the central proposition remains deliberately simple: recognise the people who contribute to shared moments, and then share the chocolate with them.

In doing so, Made To Share transforms a familiar chocolate slab into a small celebration of the everyday relationships, rituals and personalities that shape South African life.
