INDIA – Mother Dairy, a wholly owned subsidiary of National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), has unveiled India’s FIRST naturally degradable milk pouch in soil, reinforcing its long-standing commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship.
The company will introduce this packaging innovation through its famed Cow Milk variant in Delhi NCR, which will also feature a refreshed pack design, beginning World Environment Day (June 5, 2026).
Mother Dairy’s new milk pouch uses a first-of-its-kind degradable packaging innovation that enables the material to transform into bioavailable wax, which is naturally broken down by microbes present in the soil to turn it into natural elements.
Unveiling the new packaging innovation, Dr. Meenesh Shah, Chairman, National Dairy Development Board and Mother Dairy, said, “As the world’s largest milk producer, India’s dairy sector stands as a true testament to scale, inclusivity and responsibility. It is one of the few sectors where sustainability is intrinsically linked across the entire value chain. Mother Dairy’s mission extends beyond dairy. It is committed to enriching lives through nutrition and to safeguarding the planet with a sense of commitment and care.
”The launch of India’s first naturally degradable milk pouch by Mother Dairy is yet another milestone reflecting the sector’s continued ability to lead and set new benchmarks, while remaining committed to a future-ready and sustainable ecosystem. The newly introduced packaging is designed to naturally degrade in soil within a few years rather than centuries, and importantly, this transition is being undertaken without any impact on consumer milk prices.”
This packaging innovation has been designed to ensure a seamless consumer experience, with no changes required in the way consumers store, handle or dispose of the milk pouch.
Importantly, the new packaging will have no impact on the milk’s quality, shelf life, or taste, while continuing to offer the same trusted goodness that consumers associate with Mother Dairy.
Alongside this pioneering packaging innovation, Mother Dairy is also introducing a refreshed design language for its milk portfolio.
Central to the packaging refresh – which begins with Mother Dairy’s famed Cow Milk variant – is the ‘Note of Care’, a distinctive brand device inspired by the brand’s iconic logo, bringing alive the promise of Maa Jaisi care through relatable everyday expressions.
Complementing the holding structure, the refreshed packaging design also introduces cleaner typography and brighter visual tones, creating a more modern and cohesive brand identity.
Going forward, the new design system will unify the brand’s entire milk portfolio under a cohesive ‘Mother Dairy’ look, enhancing recall and brand equity.
