KENYA – Mzuzu Dairy Limited has been awarded the Company of the Year – Emerging Dairy Company at the Africa Dairy Industry Awards 2026, held on 17th April 2026 alongside the Africa Dairy Innovation Summit.
The recognition highlights the company’s rapid growth and its transformative role in revitalising Malawi’s dairy sector, particularly in the northern region.
Founded in 2019 and headquartered in Mzuzu, Malawi, Mzuzu Dairy was established to address long-standing structural challenges within the country’s dairy value chain, including limited market access, low productivity, and inadequate farmer support systems.
The company has since positioned itself as a key link between smallholder farmers and the formal dairy market, creating a sustainable and inclusive dairy ecosystem.
Mzuzu Dairy’s business model is anchored on sourcing raw milk from smallholder farmers and cooperatives, which it processes into a range of value-added products.
Its core product portfolio includes fresh pasteurised milk, yoghurt, and chambiko, a traditional fermented milk product widely consumed in Malawi.
These products are distributed across the northern region, including Mzuzu, Nkhata Bay, Rumphi, and Karonga, with growing penetration into formal retail outlets.
The company has demonstrated significant operational growth since its inception.
Early investments in processing infrastructure, estimated at approximately K75 million (US$97,000), enabled Mzuzu Dairy to double its production capacity from 2,500 litres to 5,000 litres per day, with further expansion plans aimed at scaling output to meet rising market demand.
This growth trajectory reflects increasing consumer demand for locally processed dairy products and reduced reliance on imports.
A defining feature of Mzuzu Dairy’s success is its strong commitment to dairy development and farmer empowerment.
The company works with a network of up to 5,000 smallholder farmers, providing a reliable market, competitive pricing, and extension services aimed at improving productivity, milk quality, and farm management practices.
These services include training in animal health, nutrition, breeding, and climate-smart dairy farming, addressing key constraints that have historically limited dairy production in Malawi.
In addition, Mzuzu Dairy integrates sustainability and innovation into its operations.
The company promotes climate-smart agriculture through initiatives such as hydroponic fodder production, agroforestry systems, and biogas utilisation, ensuring consistent feed supply while reducing environmental impact.
Market developments in Malawi further support the company’s growth.
The country’s dairy sector has faced declining productivity due to inadequate infrastructure and weak value chains, creating a gap that Mzuzu Dairy is actively addressing by building structured supply systems and expanding processing capacity.
The Company of the Year – Emerging Dairy Company award recognises organisations that demonstrate innovation, scalability, and impact.
