SIG equips Oobli with aseptic formats for its protein-sweetened beverages

Collaboration combines sweet protein technology and aseptic packaging expertise to accelerate reduced-sugar, shelf-stable beverage innovation.

USA – SIG and Oobli have announced a strategic partnership aimed at advancing a new generation of reduced-sugar beverages using protein-based sweetening and aseptic packaging technologies.

The collaboration brings together Oobli’s sweet protein platform with SIG’s aseptic filling systems and packaging formats to create shelf-stable beverages that maintain taste while eliminating the need for refrigeration.

The initiative targets growing consumer demand for healthier drink options that balance functionality, flavour and convenience.

At the core of the partnership is Oobli’s use of plant-based sweet proteins, which enable significant sugar reduction without compromising sensory appeal.

This approach allows beverage manufacturers to deliver improved nutritional profiles while maintaining clean-label positioning, an increasingly important factor in purchasing decisions.

SIG’s aseptic technology complements this by enabling long shelf life at ambient temperatures, reducing reliance on cold-chain logistics and preservatives.

The result is a more flexible distribution model, particularly suited to emerging markets and regions with limited refrigeration infrastructure.

The companies also highlight the ability to support multiple packaging formats and volumes, backed by SIG’s global network of innovation centres.

These facilities provide access to pilot equipment, technical expertise and testing capabilities, helping brands accelerate product development and commercialization.

The partnership was formed through MISTA, a San Francisco-based global innovation hub that connects stakeholders across food, ingredients and technology sectors. Both companies are active members, reflecting a shared commitment to collaborative innovation.

Ali Wing, CEO of Oobli, said the collaboration responds directly to evolving consumer expectations for beverages that deliver both taste and health benefits.

She noted that combining sweet protein technology with proven packaging systems will help scale reduced-sugar products across different price points and distribution channels.

Similarly, Norman Gierow, Director Global Customer Marketing at SIG, emphasized the role of the partnership in enabling manufacturers to bring healthier beverages to market more efficiently.

He added that the integration of advanced filling systems with novel sweetening solutions strengthens SIG’s position at the intersection of taste, health and convenience.

Initial efforts will focus on developing and validating beverage concepts that demonstrate reduced sugar content, natural protein-based sweetness and shelf stability.

The partners are undertaking joint development projects, pilot runs and consumer testing to assess performance, flavour and product integrity across key markets.
