French authorities recall cheeses linked to two fatal Listeria cases

Authorities urge consumers who have purchased the mentioned products to refrain from consuming them and to return the items to the place of purchase.

FRANCE – According to the French Agriculture Ministry, all cheese produced before 23 June and distributed until 9 August has been recalled from French supermarkets due to a listeria outbreak linked to cheese.

According to a communiqué from the Ministry of Labor, Health, Solidarity, and Family Affairs of the Republic, the company Chavegrand, in collaboration with the authorities, is conducting a recall of all batches of cheese produced before June 23, 2025.

The ministry specified that cases of listeriosis have been predominantly recorded since early June 2025, with the ages of those affected ranging from 34 to 95 years.

The recall involves “soft cheeses with a white mold rind, made from pasteurized cow’s or goat’s milk.” These cheeses were sold throughout France and abroad under various brand names until August 9, 2025.

The affected batches, sold under various brands in France and abroad, include products such as camembert, brie, gorgonzola and goat cheese, mainly from the brands Le Berger, Le Lion un fromage royal, Saveur d’antan and Le Petit Grignoteur, Le Monde reported.

Anyone in possession of these products is asked not to consume them”, said the French ministry.

Listeriosis is an infectious disease caused by the bacteria Listeria monocytogenes. Infection can occur through the consumption of contaminated products, particularly vegetables and animal products.

The disease is characterized by a variety of clinical manifestations, including damage to the nervous system and lymph nodes.

Canada recalls plant-based beverages due to Listeria contamination

Additionally, in 2024, due to concerns over Listeria contamination, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) issued a recall for several plant-based beverages, specifically Silk and Great Value brand almond, cashew, coconut, and oat milk.

The recall responds to a foodborne illness outbreak, with reported illnesses linked to these products. Consumers are advised to discard or return the recalled beverages to the purchase location.

Listeria contamination in food is particularly insidious because the affected products may appear normal without any signs of spoilage.

However, consumption can lead to severe health issues. Symptoms of Listeria infection include vomiting, nausea, persistent fever, muscle aches, severe headache, and neck stiffness. The CFIA emphasizes the importance of heeding the recall to avoid these potentially serious health risks.
