KDDC auctions dairy cows to make way for high-yield breeds

A total of 25 cows were made available to the public through an open bidding process.

KENYA – The Kakamega Dairy Development Corporation (KDDC) has put up 25 dairy cows for public auction as part of efforts to boost revenue collection and create space for the introduction of new high-yielding dairy animals.

The exercise, launched under the oversight of Pavement Auctioneers, kicked off at Bukura and Khwisero Smart Dairy Farms, with further auctions planned for Kabras and Matungu. A total of 25 cows were made available to the public through an open bidding process.

According to KDDC’s Disposal Committee Chair, Dr. Ezekiel Lumbasi, the cows on sale are well-kept and suitable for both milk and beef production, providing a valuable opportunity for local farmers and agribusinesses to expand their herds.

The decision to dispose of these animals is rooted in KDDC’s strategy to free up space for the introduction of high-yielding, genetically superior breeds that will further its mission of promoting sustainable and profitable dairy farming in the region.

The initiative is also expected to bolster revenue collection while ensuring optimal use of available resources.

Farmers, investors, and cooperative societies were encouraged to participate in the bidding process to benefit from the quality livestock on offer.

Kakamega County inks deal to resurrect milk factory

Last year, the stalled milk factory in Malava constituency, Kakamega County, was set to be completed by December following a recent deal between the county government and investor ABF United Company Limited.

The construction of the milk processing plant, initiated by former Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya in 2019, had faced delays; however, the new agreement aims to breathe new life into the project.

Governor Fernandes Barasa, during the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding with ABF United Company Limited, announced that they have reached a consensus on completing and operationalizing the project.

The milk plant is expected to create 1,000 jobs, significantly contributing to local employment.

“We have agreed on modalities to complete the project before the year ends so that we can create jobs and support our dairy farmers who have eagerly awaited the completion of the project,” Governor Barasa stated.

In addition to the completion of the milk processing plant, the county has also partnered with the company to establish a feed factory to sustain dairy farmers.

The feed factory will support livestock farming and value addition, further integrating beef into the dairy value chain.
