KDB Strengthens West Pokot’s dairy sector with strategic partnerships

KENYA – The Kenya Dairy Board has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the dairy sector in West Pokot County, where 132,545 dairy cows produce 147.3 million litres of milk annually.

Recent engagements with county leaders and industry stakeholders have highlighted the region’s potential for further growth and sustainability.

A visit to Lelan Highland Dairies by Deputy Governor Robert Komolle, Kenya Dairy Board Chairman Genesio Mugo, Managing Director Margaret Rugut Kibogy, and officials from the Directorate of Veterinary Services, Kenya Animal Genetic Resources Centre, and Kenya Veterinary Vaccines Production Institute showcased the progress made in the county.

Established in 2009, Lelan Highland Dairies has expanded from 500 farmers to 6,000, with 16 collection centres and a daily milk collection of 25,000 litres.

The cooperative has partnered with processors such as Brookside Dairy and New KCC to provide a stable market for farmers while investing in pasteurisation and milk ATMs to enhance milk quality and accessibility.

Speaking during the visit, Kenya Dairy Board Chairman Genesio Mugo stated, “Lelan Dairies is a perfect example of what strategic partnerships and farmer empowerment can achieve. We are committed to supporting such initiatives to drive the dairy sector forward.”

His remarks underscored the importance of collaboration in ensuring long-term sustainability for dairy farmers.

Meanwhile, to improve herd health and milk production, the Directorate of Veterinary Services, led by Dr. Allan Azegele, launched a livestock vaccination campaign in collaboration with county officials, the Kenya Animal Genetic Resources Centre, and the Kenya Veterinary Vaccines Production Institute.

The initiative aims to reduce disease outbreaks, lower mortality rates, and enhance milk quality supplied to processors and local markets.

Farmers can achieve higher productivity and income stability by ensuring animals receive critical vaccines.

The county’s dedication to advancing the dairy industry was further demonstrated when Governor Simon Kachapin hosted a delegation from the Kenya Dairy Board, Kenya Animal Genetic Resources Centre, and AFA Kenya for a welcome dinner.

The event marked the beginning of key activities, including the farmers’ field day, the Lelan Dairies processing plant visit, and the vaccination exercise.

Governor Kachapin emphasised the significance of partnerships: “Our farmers deserve access to the best techniques and resources available. By working with key partners, we are ensuring a future where dairy farming in West Pokot is sustainable and profitable.”

With investments in processing technology, improved veterinary care, and strong stakeholder collaborations, the dairy industry in West Pokot continues to expand.

Farmers benefit from better infrastructure, market access, and increased production, positioning the county as a key player in Kenya’s dairy sector.
