Nigeria’s state distributes livestock to empower women

NIGERIA – Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has begun the distribution of 7,158 goats to 2,386 women as part of a US$2.6 million initiative aimed at addressing poverty and encouraging economic independence and boosting the livestock sector.

In a statement issued by the governor’s spokesperson, the governor described the program as the second phase of the Women Empowerment Initiative under the Livestock Fattening Programme, which falls under the Kano Agro-Pastoral Development Project.

The scheme, valued at approximately US$2.9 million, targets women across all 44 local government areas in Kano State. 

Each participant receives three goats to kickstart small-scale livestock ventures, providing an opportunity to generate income and establish sustainable livelihoods.

According to the statement, the governor reiterated his administration’s dedication to combating poverty using inclusive and innovative strategies.

Future phases of the initiative are expected to extend support to women and youth with the distribution of 1,342 cows and 1,822 rams, according to Dawakin-Tofa.

“This program is part of the government’s overarching plan to empower vulnerable groups and support economic self-sufficiency among women and youth,” the spokesperson explained.

The governor urged beneficiaries to ensure the livestock is used solely for its intended purpose, emphasizing the importance of accountability and proper management within the program.

The initiative also aligns with efforts to integrate women and youth into the agricultural value chain, aiming to enhance household income and reduce reliance on government assistance, Dawakin-Tofa added.

Nigeria, which has the largest goat population in Africa, is focusing on enhancing its livestock production as part of its economic diversification efforts. 

In 2022, the country’s goat population was estimated at 88 million, the highest on the continent.

In 2020, Nigeria produced over 261,000 metric tons of goat meat, making it Africa’s leading producer. The country is also home to three primary goat breeds: the Sahel, Red Sokoto, and West African Dwarf, which are widely used for meat and other purposes.
