KALRO, CABI strengthen research partnership to support livestock and farmers

KENYA – The Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO) and the Centre for Agriculture and Bioscience International (CABI) are strengthening collaboration on agricultural research, technology adoption and farmer support, with opportunities to improve livestock production and animal health outcomes in Kenya.

KALRO Director General hosted CABI CEO Dr. Daniel Elger, CABI Executive Director for Africa Dr. Akiri Morris and CABI Regional Director Dr. Daniel Karanja at KALRO Headquarters to discuss areas of joint action.

The discussions covered food safety, early-warning systems, artificial intelligence (AI), digital agriculture, technology adoption, farmer training, youth empowerment and resource mobilisation.

Stronger links between research institutions and farmers could support the development and adoption of practical technologies and production solutions in Kenya’s livestock sector.

It will also improve access to timely information on animal health and farm management.

Linking research with livestock production

KALRO brings research expertise across Kenya’s agricultural and livestock systems, while CABI contributes experience in agricultural research, biological control, digital advisory services and technology adoption.

The organisations highlighted digital agriculture and AI as potential tools for improving farmers’ access to information and technical advice. 

Greater use of these technologies could also strengthen how research findings are translated into practical solutions for livestock producers.

The partnership also emphasises farmer training and youth empowerment, areas that could support skills development across Kenya’s livestock and agribusiness sectors.

For livestock producers, access to reliable research and advisory services is increasingly important as the sector faces challenges around animal health, productivity, climate variability, food safety and production efficiency.

The two organisations are seeking to strengthen collaboration between research and agricultural stakeholders to translate scientific knowledge and innovation into practical solutions that improve farmer livelihoods and strengthen food production in Kenya.
