INDIA – Amul has announced plans to lay the foundation stone for a new dairy plant in West Bengal on June 14, with an investment of Rs. 700 crore (US$ 74.8 million).
The foundation stone-laying ceremony is likely to be attended by Union Home Minister Mr. Amit Shah, underscoring the significance of the project for the region’s industrial and dairy sector development.
The investment reflects Amul’s continued focus on expanding its dairy processing and value-added product capabilities while strengthening its presence in eastern India.
The upcoming facility is expected to contribute to the growth of West Bengal’s dairy ecosystem by enhancing processing infrastructure and supporting the broader development of the sector.
The project is also anticipated to generate economic activity and employment opportunities while reinforcing the state’s attractiveness as an investment destination.
Industry stakeholders view the investment as a positive step towards expanding organised dairy operations in the region and improving value-chain efficiencies.
The initiative aligns with ongoing efforts to promote industrial growth and strengthen agro-processing infrastructure in West Bengal.

Amul launches AI assistant to boost dairy production in India
Recently, the company introduced an artificial intelligence–based assistant, Sarlaben, to support dairy farmers across Gujarat.
However, rising costs, climate stress and animal health risks now challenge smallholder farmers. In response, cooperatives are exploring technology-led solutions to sustain productivity and farmer incomes.
Expected to benefit over 36 lakh milk producers in Gujarat, mainly women, the AI-assistant will offer personal guidance on cattle, feed, vaccinations and even government schemes and subsidies
Farmers can access guidance in local languages through digital platforms. As a result, they no longer rely only on physical extension visits.
This approach helps spread standardised best practices across villages. It also improves response time during health or feeding-related issues. Over time, such support can reduce avoidable losses and improve milk output.
The launch comes at a time when digital transformation is accelerating across agriculture and dairy value chains, with artificial intelligence, satellite mapping and predictive analytics increasingly viewed as essential tools to drive productivity, traceability, sustainability and climate resilience.
