Danone Mexico reaffirms its commitment to reducing sugar in its products

This strategy could incentivize other companies to reduce sugar in their products, ultimately benefiting consumers and the industry as a whole.

MEXICO – Danone Mexico, a dairy manufacturer, has announced its latest effort to reduce sugar in its products, a decision that reflects the industry’s commitment to consumer health.

After announcing its 22% reduction in added sugar content in its products worldwide, Danone now announced that it will continue with this trend until 2030, to further reduce levels without affecting taste or nutritional profile, which is a challenge because it requires “a lot of science and research.

By 2030 new targets are coming and yes, the reduction of sugars is surely coming. We do not yet have the quantity, but we know that it is something that will be maintained,” said Alejandra Romero, nutritionist and head of Scientific Affairs at Danone de México.

He indicated that the global team is working on formulating products to continue decreasing the percentage of added sugars in their products. Since 2017, the multinational food and beverage company has reduced the added sugar in its products by 22% globally.

Particularly in Mexico, since the implementation of the Official Mexican Standards (NOMs), it has reduced 48.3% of the added sugar in its product Danonino, which contains only 1.2 g of added sugar.

“Reaching these figures is very challenging, it requires a lot of science and research. At Danone Mexico we have had a very interesting battle and the numbers support us,” said Mary Luz Valderrama, Vice President of Research and Innovation at Danone Mexico.

She added that Danone established a limit of 10 grams of sugar per serving in all its products for children. The products that they market in Mexico have remained below that level. The WHO recommendation is 25 grams per day.

Sugar is necessary to develop the biological responses that the body demands, but it must be consumed in an appropriate way and at specific times of the day,” she added.

Danone’s decision has a direct impact on the supply chain and innovation. To reduce sugar without compromising taste and quality, the company has invested in research and development to find natural substitutes, such as stevia, and to improve production processes.

This focus on innovation is a growth driver for the dairy sector, encouraging the production of high-quality milk and the adoption of technology that enables the production of healthier and more nutritious products.

Danone’s commitment to consumer health also has an impact on market competition. By being one of the first companies to take such a bold step, Danone is positioning itself as a leader in the dairy industry and sending a clear message to its competitors: innovation and health are the key to the future.
