INDIA – Amul has announced a major investment of Rs 600 crore to establish the world’s largest curd manufacturing plant in Kolkata.
The Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd (GCMMF), which owns the Amul brand, confirmed this development during the Bengal Global Business Summit (BGBS) 2025.
This integrated dairy plant is expected to boost Amul’s presence in West Bengal and strengthen India’s dairy sector.
Jayen Mehta, Managing Director of GCMMF, stated, “We will be setting up an integrated dairy plant in Kolkata, West Bengal.
The new facility will have the world’s largest curd manufacturing plant with a capacity of 10 lakh kg per day.”
The plant, which will be located at Sankrail Food Park in Howrah, will also have a milk processing capacity of 1.5 million litres per day.
It is being developed in two phases by Kaira District Cooperative Milk Producers Union Ltd, Anand.
West Bengal has a high demand for dairy products, particularly curd, with local varieties such as ‘tok doi’ and ‘mishti doi’ being widely consumed.
The new facility will cater to this growing market while supporting the dairy cooperative movement under the White Revolution 2.0 initiative led by the Ministry of Cooperation.
Currently, Amul is the leading fresh milk brand in Bengal, selling over one million litres of milk per day.
The company has also established a strong milk procurement network across 14 districts, connecting more than 120,000 women milk producers.
A report by the International Farm Comparison Network (IFCN) ranks GCMMF as the eighth-largest dairy company globally in terms of milk processing.
The cooperative processes 31 million litres of milk daily and has an annual capacity of 50 million litres.
With a turnover of Rs 59,445 crore in 2023-24, Amul recorded an 8 percent growth last year and expects double-digit revenue growth in the coming year.
The company has also expanded its exports to nearly 50 countries and recently introduced four fresh milk variants in the US market.
According to Mehta, “Amul’s expansion aligns with our commitment to increasing milk production and meeting the growing demand for high-quality dairy products.”
