Kenya, Nigeria explore opportunities to enhance dairy trade

KENYA – The Kenya Dairy Board’s Managing Director, Margaret Kibogy, alongside the KDB management, hosted a high-level meeting with Nigeria’s Minister from the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development, Dr. Idi Mukhtar Maiha.

The engagement, reported by the Kenya Dairy Board, aimed to explore collaboration and trade opportunities within the dairy sector, focusing on cooperatives, breeding, production, value addition, quality, and safety.

During the discussions, the Minister acknowledged Kenya’s status as Africa’s leading milk producer, a testament to its advanced dairy industry.

According to the Minister, Nigeria, a member of the African Free Trade Area, presents an immense market potential for Kenyan dairy products, given its population of approximately 200 million and the fact that the country imports 99% of its dairy requirements.

“The Kenyan dairy industry is uniquely positioned to benefit from this opportunity, with its high-quality production standards aligning with Nigeria’s market needs.”

A report by the Kenya Dairy Board indicates that this meeting signifies the beginning of a promising partnership aimed at strengthening the dairy industries of both nations and fostering mutual economic growth.

The collaboration is expected to harness Kenya’s expertise in dairy production and Nigeria’s vast market potential, setting the stage for enhanced trade and agricultural development.

Meanwhile, Promaco East Africa, in collaboration with the Kenya Dairy Board, is also playing a key role in promoting sustainability within the dairy value chain.

A recent report highlights their efforts to empower farmers through comprehensive training programs designed to enhance farm yields and maximize value addition.

These initiatives provide valuable knowledge on best practices for safer and higher-quality milk production.

Scheduled activities, including training sessions supported by the Kenya Dairy Board, emphasize the importance of empowering farmers to adopt innovative techniques and engage with high-quality products.

Stakeholders involved in these partnerships have expressed their gratitude for the collaborative efforts aimed at advancing Kenya’s dairy sector.

Promaco East Africa, in particular, has reiterated its commitment to fostering sustainability and growth through these initiatives.

According to stakeholders, the focus remains on fostering partnerships, enhancing quality and safety standards, and equipping farmers with the tools needed to thrive in the competitive dairy industry.
